Science Slam Session

Call for Applications

We are happy to announce that the CEN-IBS in Berlin will host a Science Slam session on Monday, September 7th, 2020 in the evening, after the regular sessions. We are awaiting your fun, crazy, exceptional, out-of-the-box, and even wild contributions!

What is a Science Slam?

  • Short answer: Fun with science!

  • Long answer: In 8 minutes, honorable researchers will present their own research – but not in the usual, formal, well-behaved way! Instead, they turn into entertaining science slammers who present their ideas and results in an exciting and easy-to-understand way to a broad audience. After having enjoyed all slams together, audience is given the power and difficult task of deciding on the contest winner.

Should I present at the Science Slam?

  • Short answer: Everyone is welcome – from science slam newbies to seasoned veterans!

  • Long answer: If you think you are a funny person in general, are comfortable presenting in public,  enjoy the challenge of communicating your research to a broader audience in an understandable way, and can live without the critical questions from audience members common in other settings,  – then you should definitely think about seizing this unique opportunity! As it is an international conference, we advise you to present in English, but this is not mandatory. The best science slammers will be rewarded with great fame, infinite honor, exorbitant applause (in contrast to the short, polite one after a ‘regular’ talk), just as prizes and amazing trophies to commemorate the big night for years to come! Perhaps most importantly, the science slammers can be sure that the impact and reach of their message is excessively greater than in any other conference presentation formats. In other words: you will be remembered!

I’m not sure if I want to present, but should I still join the event?

  • Short answer: Yes, definitely!

  • Long answer: At the first day of the conference, after a day full of extremely interesting scientific sessions and enlightening speeches, the Science Slam allows us to get together to enjoy science and get to know each other in a different way! We will have a comedian moderating the event, lightening the mood, and making it an even more unique experience. Janina Rook will keep us laughing throughout the evening, motivate us to cheer on the brave slammers, and help make the evening exceptional (check out her website: or Instagram: @rook_togo).
